Driving through snow can be beautiful but unpredictable. If you’ve been behind the wheel long enough, especially during Canadian winters, you are familiar with the driving conditions. We’ve all been in unexpected situations where we could have used additional help. Here are a few essentials to keep in your vehicle during this winter! These tools will make it a lot easier to get out of most circumstances.
Ice capers and Shovel
Starting with the obvious yet very important, the ice scraper and snow brush. We’re always thankful to have those on hand, especially when getting off work and the car is enveloped in white fresh snow! Take it a step further and make sure you keep a shovel in your car. It can be a small or medium shovel, whatever you can make room for. Having a handy shovel will get you out of many predicaments during winter months!
Salt or Sand
Some winter days can create lots of ice, this is where salt or sand comes to the rescue! It’s great to keep them in your car in case you get stranded or maybe see another driver in need.
Extra fluids
This may sounds obvious yet many drivers forget to maintain a good amount of washer or antifreeze fluids. This is an important step to keep in mind, especially when a snowstorm hit! You can easily set an alarm on your phone as a reminder to ensure you are all set for the day ahead.
Jumper cables
Another essential during winter months are booster cables! These are useful year round but especially during winter months, since it can get miserable to wait in the cold. Booster cables are also great to keep in the car for other drivers that may need help.
Emergency Kit Essentials
Emergencies happen when least expected and occasionally in areas where there is no shelter. If that is the case, any driver will find it very useful to have the following in their vehicle.
Phone Charger
Make sure you have an external phone charger, this is a lifesaver in all sorts of circumstances. Especially when stranded and need to call for help.
Flares
Warning lights are vital to be visible to other drivers when stranded on the side of the road.
Heat
Emergency blankets and heating packs are extremely useful to keep warm while waiting for help.
First aid kit
Important in any emergency, we recommend to take it a step further by including a seat belt cutter.
Stuck overnight
A few other items that are important to have on hands for a longer emergencies, such as being stuck overnight are: food and water, candles and matches, flashlight, tool kit, map and gloves.
