Many articles online would suggest buying a self-driving car is the recommended thing to do. Advising on its benefits and safety features. We were curious if that’s actually the case for many car owners. As you know, many car companies are coming up with their own version of a self-driving cars and as a result, the market is more competitive and more affordable. Would that be enough to convince the daily commuter?
We recently took a look at a consumer reports survey that asked consumers whether they would prefer additional safety features or a self-driving car. (Before you continue reading, which of the two would you personally prefer?) The majority of consumers who took part of this specific survey opted for additional safety features over a self-driving car. Most specifically, they voted for a backup camera and blind spot warning indicator as their safety feature of choice!
The IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) explains that backup cameras can reduce car crashes by 17% and spot warning indicators can reduce car crashes by 14%.
Most consumer from this survey believe it’s more helpful to increase the safety features on their own vehicle rather than going with a self-driving car. They also mentioned that they would prefer to physically drive and believe they can do it better than the self-driving technology. This is definitely not surprising, as many are highly sceptical of the self-driving technology.
We looked at the IIHS website to see which vehicles made the cut for the 2018 top safety picks. Over 90 different types of vehicles are on this list, from small cars to luxury cars to SUVs. The majority of these vehicles are not self-driving, which suggests that maybe self-driving technology isn’t there yet as one of the safest vehicles. As technology goes, it takes time to develop since it’s still new! We are excited to see what the next few years will look like for the car industry!
With that being said, there are many great vehicle choices that have improved their safety features! Here is a small peak of a few models from the IIHS list of the Top Safety Picks – 2018:
– Mazda 3
