An annual car inspection is designed to keep your vehicle running safely and efficiently. It gives your mechanic a chance to give your car the once-over, looking for any issues that may by asymptomatic now, but may give you problems down the (literal!) road.
Plus, the sooner you repair things – the more affordable the repairs will be.
Schedule an appointment with your favorite mechanic and car inspection centre before the winter storm season gets underway to prevent any unnecessary breakdowns that could leave you stranded in the cold. In the meantime, here is an overview of what a thorough car safety inspection entails.
What’s Involved in a Typical Car Safety Inspection?
A car safety inspection is slightly different than a tune-up. The idea is to look at all of your vehicle’s safety systems. Some of the things we’ll inspect include:
1. Horn. Beep beep!
Your horn is part of your car’s safety system, not just a tool for “yelling” at the person who’s stopped at a green light. The horn alerts others to possible danger – as well as your physical presence – so you want to make sure it’s functioning properly.
2. Windshield Wipers
Good visibility is essential to safe driving.
3. Mirrors
Your side- and rear-view mirrors help you to see almost 360° around you. When one isn’t working, it can lead to a collision and makes passing a risky venture.
4. Steering
You may be unconsciously adjusting for faulty steering wheel/column issues that have cropped up over the years. It’s time to correct them.
5. Seat belts
Not only is it illegal to drive with malfunctioning seat belts, they save lives. According to The Canada Safety Council, “45.5 per cent of drivers and 52.2 per cent of passengers aged 15 to 24 who were fatally injured, were not wearing their seat belts.”
Make sure every passenger in your car has access to fully-functioning seat belts.
6. Tires/Brakes/Wheel Assembly
We’ll make sure your tires are in good shape and that your brakes and wheel assembly are operating as they should.
7. Exhaust System, including the emission system
In addition to keeping our air clean, routine inspections of your exhaust system make sure toxic fumes stay out of your vehicle’s interior.
8. All Lights, including heat and tail lamps, stop lamps, license plate lamps, turn signals and reflectors
From improving your view of the road, to improving others’ abilities to view you on the road, your vehicle’s flashers, lamps, lights and reflectors are an integral component of its safety system. Without an external inspection, you may not even realize that one or more of these lights isn’t working.
9. Gas cap
Have you lost your gas cap? Is your gas cap loose, cracked or broken? We’ll inspect and replace it for you to improve fuel efficiency and safety.
10. Vehicle Body
We’ll look over, under and along the sides of your vehicle and point out any obvious signs of rust, corrosion or other body damage so you can get it repaired.
